When Capcom released Resident Evil 4 back in January 2005, the companys franchise made a significant change moving away from survival horror to third person shooter-action. While the game was praised for its flawless controll and excellent gameplay, many loyal fans of Resident Evil questioned the new game due to its non-Resident Evil feeling. Even though it featured one of RE’s main characters, Leon S. Kennedy, the story was as far away from Racoon City as it possibly could get. This was however not a problem in Resident Evil: Code Veronica (which took place on a small island) but the fact that Resident Evil 4 was different from its predessors in so many ways made people either hate or love the new game. The original fans seemed unhappy and hoped that the next game would redeem the 4th installation.
The sequel, Resident Evil 5, promised to return some of the story to its old roots, put the missing piece back to the puzzle and make a grande finale for the series. Featuring another main character, Chris Redfield, as well as the main antagonist Albert Wesker, Resident Evil 5 was planning to reveal everything that had been left in mystery in the previous games and explain the origins of the T-virus. Once again, fans was dissapointed to see that the promise of a more lore-driven game was nothing but a lie. RE 5 was a great game, but heavily action-oriented. Once again, the core was not pleased.
Capcom has since then been talking about a reset for the franchise since the story of Resident Evil was concluded because of the destruction of Umbrella Corporation and the death of Albert Wesker. However, that seems to have changed somewhere along the way. Resident Evil 6 is coming, and this time – THIS TIME – it will feature all that was left out of the previous game. Resident Evil 6 is indeed returning to its roots (besides the emphasis on horror).
Starring both Chris Redfield and Leon S. Kennedy, Resident Evil 6 takes place in America and China in a very similiar faschion of Racoon City. Both characters are struggling with the endless battle of eradicating all types of bioterrorism and bio organic weapons (BOW), and when the president of the United States suddenly dies and a city becomes infested, our old heros return to the zombie action. The story focuses on a new type of virus – C – which is probably related to both G and T. Will the new virus result in a global outbreak and is Jake Muller, the son of Albert Wesker, the key to a cure?
Long lost characters such as Ada Wong and Sherry Birkin is also said to return to the long awaited game. Perhaps even Hunk. Oh, it will be glorious! Enjoy the new trailer!
Resident Evil 6 will be released October 2nd, 2012.
